    Early life and education

    Birth and boyhood

    Bowra was born in Jiujiang, China, to English parents.[2] His father, Cecil Arthur Verner Bowra (–), who worked for the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs,[3] had been born in Ningbo,[4] and his paternal grandfather, Edward Charles Bowra, had also worked for the Chinese Customs, after serving in the Ever Victorious Army under "Chinese Gordon".[5] Soon after Bowra's birth his father was transferred to the treaty port of Niuzhuang, and the family lived there for the first five years of Bowra's life,[6] except during the Boxer Rebellion, in the summer
